ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — A Romeoville man bludgeoned his wife to death with a hammer, then kept her body behind his front door for 10 days -- even as the police twice inquired about her, authorities said.
On the third visit, they smelled decay and came in and found Carol Sadler, 66.
Her husband, John Sadler, 67, was charged with her murder.
Police initially went to the home on Saturday, after a friend told them she had not heard from Carol, Romeoville Police Assistant Chief Steven Lucchesi said. When police arrived, Sadler told them she was in Michigan.
But police were called to the home again Monday after the couple’s daughter in Texas called to say she also had not heard from her mother, Lucchesi said.
Again, Sadler shooed officers away telling them his wife was out of town, Lucchesi said.
When officers went in the final time Monday night, Sadler admitted that he beat his wife following a fight, Lucchesi said.
Sadler is a registered CPA in Romeoville, Lucchesi said.
