FRANKFORT, Ill. — A Frankfort man already in jail on murder charges wanted someone to help him kill a Will County prosecutor, police said.
Brian Trainauskas, 36, was charged with solicitation of murder Tuesday. Officials said his case has been referred to the Illinois Attorney General, but an attorney general spokeswoman would confirm only that Trainauskas’ alleged target was an assistant state’s attorney assigned to his pending murder case.
Trainauskas is also charged with the January 2009 murder of Monica Timar of Frankfort Township, whose body was found wrapped in a bed comforter in the trunk of her 2007 Ford Mustang in the 21000 block of 78th Avenue, a few blocks from Trainauskas’ house. Police said she was shot in the back of the head.
A friend reported Timar missing a few days earlier. Trainauskas allegedly told police she was suicidal, so he “called her bluff” and grabbed a shotgun. Prosecutors said they struggled with the gun, which went off with Trainauskas in control.
Trainauskas initially told police he found Timar’s body on his bathroom floor, where she had shot herself with his shotgun. But he was arrested after police determined Timar could not have shot herself with the gun.
He’s being held in the Will County Jail on $5 million bail, but court records show he unsuccessfully asked a judge in February to lower that to $1 million. Trainauskas said he couldn’t get proper medical treatment in the jail, and he said he feared all conversations with his attorney were being recorded.
Chuck Pelkie, spokesman for the Will County state’s attorney’s office, declined to comment on the new case other than to say it’s important to make sure prosecutors are safe and able to perform their duties.
“We’re very concerned that one of our prosecutors might have been targeted in such a manner,” Pelkie said.
Trainauskas is scheduled to be arraigned on the new charges Wednesday.
