FARMINGTON, Mo. — An inmate in a Missouri prison created fraudulent tax claims that resulted in the Internal Revenue Service issuing nearly $55,000 in refunds.

Kevin D. Dunham, 46, pleaded guilty in federal court on Monday to the scheme he conducted in 2008-09 while an inmate at the Farmington Correctional Center and the Western Missouri Correctional Center.

Dunham prepared false Forms W2 on a typewriter in his cell and produced handwritten Forms 1040EZ in the names of other inmates. The documents were sent to the inmates’ families, which then made the claims to the IRS and shared the money with the inmates and with Dunham.
