AUSTIN, Texas — NFL free agent running back Cedric Benson has been arrested in downtown Austin on an assault charge.
Travis County sheriff’s spokesman Roger Wade says the Cincinnati Bengals’ leading rusher for the past three seasons was arrested on a misdemeanor count of assault with bodily injury with family violence.
Benson attorney Sam Bassett says in a statement the arrest followed “a conflict” between Benson and a male former roommate. Wade says Benson posted a $10,000 bond and was released just before 2 p.m.
The arrest comes one year following another arrest for an alleged bar fight in Texas. The NFL didn’t discipline Benson for that incident. He also had two alcohol-related arrests in 2008 as a member of the Chicago Bears, who drafted him out of the University of Texas.
