OXTED, Surrey — A British teenager is serving 25 years behind bars for killing and dismembering his 17-year-old girlfriend, after allegedly taking a cue from the hit TV show ‘Dexter.’
Buzzfeed reports that Steven Miles stabbed and dismembered Elizabeth Thomas at his family home. He cut off her legs and arm, wrapping them in clingfilm in a manner similar to that of the titular character on ‘Dexter,’ a show about a forensics expert who is also a serial killer.
He used tools and saws from his father’s tree surgery business to cut up Thomas’ body. He then placed the body parts in garbage bags.
Miles is a diagnosed autistic, and claims to have an alter ego named Ed. When his sister arrived home after the murder, he told her: “Ed made me do something bad.”
“This was a truly gruesome killing ripped from the pages of a hit TV script,” said Lewis Power, defense attorney. “The evidence points to the defendant trying to emulate the actions of the character Dexter, who he idolized.
“The case is a sad testament to the perils of how young people can become entrenched in modern TV blockbusters involving violence which shockingly led to a copycat killing in real life.”
