TAYLOR COUNTY, Texas — Darrell Eugene Schenk, 51, was sentenced to six additional years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to a felony charge of escape.
Schenk escaped from the Taylor County Jail last year while serving a two-year sentence for burglary of a building, according to Taylor County court records.
He was scheduled for trial Monday morning but decided to enter a guilty plea instead.
On the afternoon of Oct. 4, Schenk climbed to the roof of the Taylor County Jail and jumped over a fence.
Taylor County sheriff’s deputies and authorities from the French Robertson Unit and other agencies tracked Schenk using bloodhounds and officers on horseback.
A helicopter equipped with thermal imaging sensors and night-vision capabilities was brought in to assist.
He was located in a mesquite grove shortly before 11 p.m. the same day.
Schenk faced two to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.
