SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man has pleaded guilty to murder in the 1998 stabbing death of a 10-year-old girl.

Matthew John Breck pleaded guilty to homicide Friday in 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City and will serve life in prison without parole.

The 32-year-old was arrested and extradited to Utah from an Idaho prison in 2010 after police used DNA testing to link him to the death of Anna Palmer.

Palmer was found unconscious and bleeding on the front porch of her Salt Lake City home on Sept. 10, 1998. The girl suffered five fatal stab wounds to the throat, including one that severed her spinal cord.

In exchange for the guilty plea, Breck will not face the death penalty.
