Cameras demanded after Attica correctional officers plead guilty

Acting Corrections Commissioner Anthony Annucci wants 500 cameras installed at the facility within the year

ATTICA, NY — Prosecutors in Wyoming County are calling for cameras to be added to the Attica Correctional Facility after three correctional officers pleaded guilty to severely beating an inmate.

Acting Corrections Commissioner Anthony Annucci wants 500 cameras installed at the facility within the year, according to WHAM.

Security cameras currently monitor inmates in the dining halls and visitation areas, and portable cameras are used to transport inmates facing discipline as well as inside segregation areas, though it is unclear how many.

District Attorney Donald O’Green suggested outfitting the facility’s 600 correctional officers with body cameras, though he acknowledged that it would be expensive.

The officer’s union has not taken a position on body cameras but did say that “any actions taken that would help increase the safety of corrections officers would be welcome.”
