Contraband: Commissary item contraband

A C1 member in Indiana wrote, “Commissary item offender purchases are beginning to be more widely used now to conceal their illegal contraband. The picture in which you see here are food and snack packages that, if not searched thoroughly, could be easily use to conceal contraband.

Offenders, as we know, have a lot of time on their hands to invent creative things for the wrong reasons.

On these specific packages this offender has very carefully and nicely placed Velcro on the seal so well that you can hardly see it. With the Velcro, the offender could store and retrieve his contraband when he wanted to-- and quickly.

The packages contained a cell phone, cell phone charger, SIM cards, and miscellaneous drugs. They also contained wet and loose items to make feeling the package from the outside more realistic to fool you.

So my advice to my fellow officers is to closely examine items from commissary (i.e. food, drink, snack items) more closely and look at all angles and seals to make sure it hasn’t been tampered with.

If it doesn’t look or feel right, have the offender open it and confiscate it for further investigation, metal detector, or x-ray it, just to be on the safe side.
