HARTFORD, Conn. — Connecticut’s child advocate says a transgender teenage girl has been moved from one part of the state women’s prison to another, but her supporters say she remains in isolation to the detriment of her mental health.
Child Advocate Sarah Eagan said Tuesday the teenager was relocated within York Correctional Institution in East Lyme. Eagan says she’s not sure the new location could be considered less isolated. The Department of Children and Families denies that the girl is in isolation.
A judge ordered the girl to prison last month after the state agency said she was too violent to be in its custody.
The girl’s lawyer says she has been isolated since she arrived at York, and the only difference with the new location is that she can’t hear inmates screaming.
