The coffee mug pictured is one bought off of commissary, then altered. One of the most common ways they are altered is by pulling out the inner cup (the red portion) that is sealed down inside the outer mug (the white portion) in order to hide contraband in the bottom, under the red cup.

According to the C1 member, at the time the cell phone charger was found, the mug was full of hot coffee. The easiest way to test whether the mug itself is full of coffee is to either pour it out or to insert a spoon to see how far down it will go. If the spoon hits a bottom too soon, contraband could be hidden inside.
