UNITED KINGDOM — Knives, heroin and cocaine were seized hundreds of times from prisons last year, official figures showed.
In 2013 there were at least 62 knife seizures, alongside 210 confiscations of heroin and 80 of cocaine, the Ministry of Justice figures showed.
The true figure for knife confiscations could be higher as data was not available for a number of prisons.
Prisons Minister Jeremy Wright insisted contraband is taken “extremely seriously” and said “body orifice scanners”, x-ray machines, CCTV cameras and targeted drug tests were all being used to combat smuggling.
