CACHE COUNTY, Utah — An inmate at the Cache County Jail attacked a fellow prisoner using a homemade weapon Saturday, leaving the victim with lacerations on his face and back, sheriff’s officials say.

In a press statement released Saturday night, Sheriff’s Lt. Chad Jensen said 19-year-old Fernando Infante assaulted 18-year-old Rocky Rivera while both inmates were being moved around in the facility.

“Infante used a homemade edged weapon to assault Rivera in a common area of the jail,” he said. “Rivera was injured in the face and back.”

Jail staff subdued Infante and Rivera was transported to Logan Regional Hospital. Jensen said the jail was locked down after the incident while a Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team, or SERT, responded to search other cells for additional weapons. None were found, he said.

“Cache County investigators were called to follow up with a criminal investigation on the assault,” Jensen said. “The case is still under investigation and being reviewed with the Cache County Attorney’s Office.”

According to state court records, Infante is serving time for vehicle burglary and unlawful possession of a financial card. He was sentenced April 12 by Judge Thomas Willmore to serve 180 days in jail for the charges.

Rivera was booked into jail in October on drug possession charges.
