La. prison staff member dies from COVID-19

DOC officials said the staff member’s name will not be released due to HIPAA restrictions and security concerns

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Louisiana Department of Corrections confirmed Friday that a staff member at the Louisiana State Penitentiary has died from COVID-19.

DOC officials said the staff member’s name will not be released due to HIPAA restrictions and security concerns, WAFB.com reported. This is the first reported death of a state prison staff member, according to the report.

Currently, 37 employees from the state’s prisons have tested positive for COVID-19, including 12 employees at Angola. DOC officials also reported 46 positive cases among the inmate population. There have been no reported COVID-19-related deaths of inmates.
