SANTA ANA, Calif. — Authorities are investigating the death of a 28-year-old inmate at the Orange County Jail on Tuesday, Sheriff’s Department officials said.
The man, who was being held on a suspected parole violation, was found unresponsive in his cell about 7:30a.m., the department said. Deputies and the jail’s medical staff were unable to revive him; paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Authorities have not determined what caused the man’s death but say there were no obvious signs of foul play. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
Authorities are not releasing the man’s identity until his family is notified of his death.
Sheriff’s officials did not specify how the man violated his parole or what original charges he faced.
The man was reportedly booked into the jail just before noon Monday and was being housed in a one-person cell at the jail’s intake and release center.
The center is where inmates are taken when they first arrive at jail, are about to leave or are on their way to court appearances, although it houses regular inmates as well.
As is customary with in-custody deaths, the District Attorney’s Office is investigating.
