SALT LAKE CITY — Nearly 125 correctional officer positions at the Utah State Prison are empty, and Corrections Director Rollin Cook said he is “nervous every day” about staffing levels inside the aged, sprawling facility.

“As a correctional officer, I know how important it is to be fully staffed, and the difference that can make when you have something that goes bad,” Cook said in an interview with 2News. “There’s always that worry. Thankfully, the training that our officers have, the determination and the dedication to do their jobs, help us carry the day.

“But sooner or later, that’s going to break. You see it in other facilities across the country, and you worry that today is going to be our day.”
