Off-duty La. corrections deputy killed in shooting

BATON ROUGE, La. — An off-duty St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office corrections deputy was killed in a shooting Tuesday night in Opelousas, according to an Opelousas Police Department announcement.

Chanterria “Mackey” Albert, 23, died at an Opelousas hospital after a shooting on the 1100 block of Park Avenue left Albert and one other injured, but in stable condition.

Police responded to reports of shots fired on Park Avenue near 10:30 p.m. Tuesday . The two victims were transported to the hospital by the time officers arrived.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Department confirmed late Wednesday morning that the deceased was one of their corrections deputies.

“My entire staff and I are mourning the loss of one of our family members as a result of senseless gun violence last night in the City of Opelousas ,” Sheriff Bobby Guidroz wrote in a statement.

The Sheriff’s Office will assist OPD in locating the shooter, while OPD said their investigation is ongoing.

Albert was hired on May 10, 2022. She worked alongside her mother, Deputy Cherikas Albert.
