LA PLATA, Md. — Two Maryland corrections officers are being called heroes after saving a woman from a burning car.
Charles County Sheriff’s Corrections Officers Eric Keys and Phillip Norris were transporting a prisoner back from a court appearance when they saw a burning SUV on the side of the road, local news station WJLA reports.
Bystanders saw the SUV swerve and crash into a tree, igniting into flames and spreading fire throughout the woods nearby.
Norris stayed with the van and prisoner while Keys ran to the burning vehicle. After Keys broke the car’s window, he noticed there was an unconscious woman inside.
“I pulled her out and drug her 15-20 yards away from the vehicle,” Keys said.
Keys administered CPR for what Norris says was 10 minutes.
“Once I got into the rhythm of CPR, it was a go from there,” Keys said. “The best feeling I had was to feel her lungs push back on my hands. As I did the last chest compression, she started breathing on her own.”
After the COs revived the woman, paramedics and firefighters arrived. They gave the woman Narcan, an opioid countering drug, and transported her to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
