OAKLAND, Calif. — An off-duty corrections officer thwarted a carjacking Saturday morning.

SFGate.com reported that a suspected car thief, who crashed into another car on an interstate, allegedly attempted to carjack another vehicle to get away but was thwarted by the vehicle’s owner — an off-duty California DOC corrections officer.

“He tried to steal the wrong vehicle,” California Highway Patrol Officer Sean Layton said.

The suspect allegedly tried to steal the corrections officer’s car, who pulled up to help after the crash. The corrections officer detained the unarmed suspect. He was later taken into custody by the CHP, according to the report.

No injuries were reported.
