TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa County sheriff’s deputy is donating a kidney to his mother in order to save her life.

Captain Billy McKelvey knew his mother, Elizabeth McKelvey, was running out of time when doctors told him her kidneys were failing, according to News on 6. Even though his kidneys were not a match, he found out about a St. Louis hospital procedure that would make his kidneys compatible.

Doctors say that even though their blood types don’t match, the mother-son relationship will keep McKelvey’s kidney from being rejected.

“It feels good. He said,’ Mom, you fed me for 20 years, 18, 20 years, now it’s time for me to take care of you and dad.’ So here we are,” Elizabeth McKelvey said.

No information was given about the time or date of the operation, but it will take McKelvey’s mother several weeks to recover after the operation. The family hopes to be back home before the end of March.
