Bloomberg cites success of city programs in declining inmate population

NEW YORK — With just five days left in office, Mayor Bloomberg on Thursday shared another secret to his success. In a word: Resiliency.

At an event designed to highlight another of his achievements as mayor — a decline in the city’s incarceration rate — Bloomberg appeared moved by the story of Michael Smith, a 24-year-old who is turning his life around after he was arrested last year.

“There will be times when it’s tough and you think that everything’s going against you and that’s the time you have to grit your teeth and say you know, the future is all yours,” the self-made billionaire told Smith. “You can really make something out of your life.”

“Everyone in this room has the exact same problems,” Bloomberg added. The key, he said, is resiliency. My advice is, on the days when it’s bad, you just get it out of your mind. Don’t focus on it. That’s what I do.”
