PATERSON — Perhaps stealing a GPS system from a vehicle parked down the street from the Passaic County Jail wasn’t such a good idea.

Passaic County Corrections Officer Raymond Saez was supervising inmates on a cleanup detail at the jail’s Main Street visiting center at 9 am on Thursday when he head someone calling for police help, according to a news release.

Saez then spotted the man running after someone down the street, yelling that his car had been broken into, said Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik.

Saez chased the suspect and caught him on Hamilton Street, near the county welfare building, Berdnik said. The suspect, Kenneth Gayda, 42, of Paterson, was carrying the GPS he allegedly stole from the car, police said.

“I wanted to commend Correction Officer Raymond Saez and others for working quickly to make this arrest,” said Berdnik.
