CONCORD, N.H. — Prosecutors have dropped their case against one of three New Hampshire corrections officers who were indicted on charges linked to the treatment of an inmate at a Concord halfway house last year.

The Concord Monitor reports 40-year-old Dennis Fitton of Alexandria was cleared Wednesday of witness tampering. Fitton was accused of withholding medical care from an inmate until he agreed to report that he had cut himself.

Assistant County Attorney George Waldron says statements from Fitton and other prisoners suggest that the inmate had lied about being injured.

Charges are still pending against 47-year-old Sgt. Robert Gauthier of Epsom, and 37-year-old Sgt. Gary Burke of Northfield.

Fitton’s attorney says the Department of Corrections and New Hampshire Police Standards and Training have been notified of the change.
