RACINE — The man who escaped custody and spent nearly 12 hours on the loose in Racine Monday told police he ran away from a state Department of Corrections agent because he was scared he would be sent back to prison.

Jesus G. Arroyo, of Racine, is now facing more prison time after he was charged with escape while under extended supervision and with resisting an officer-causing a soft tissue injury, both felonies. He was also charged with resisting/obstructing an officer, a misdemeanor.

Cash bond was set Wednesday at $100,000 during an initial appearance, at which Arroyo and his attorney appeared via video conference. District Attorney Rich Chiapete requested the bond, saying Arroyo is “obviously a flight risk” who was previously convicted of escape in Kenosha County.

A preliminary court hearing is scheduled for June 11.
