SAN FRANCISCO — A man who allegedly threatened a coffee-shop owner on Sunday and then attacked a police officer trying to arrest him died later that day at San Francisco County Jail, authorities said Monday.
The man, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, was “agitated and combative” when being booked at 1 p.m. Sunday for three counts of battery on a police officer and one count each of possession of a controlled substance, trespassing, resisting arrest and making threats, sheriff’s spokeswoman Eileen Hirst said Monday.
Deputies put the man in a safety cell, and when they checked on him two minutes later, he was unresponsive, Hirst said. He was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m.
The cause of his death will be determined by an autopsy, and his death is under investigation by sheriff’s investigators, Hirst said.
Police spokeswoman Lt. Lyn Tomioka said the man was arrested at a coffee house on the 2200 block of Market Street at 10:20 a.m. after he allegedly threatened the owner and refused to leave. Three officers grappled with the man, who bit one of them as they attempted to put him in a hold, Tomioka said.
‘One officer had to punch the man in the shoulder to get him handcuffed, Tomioka said.
