BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — An inmate who accused a correctional officer of assaulting him his case Thursday, but was only awarded $10 for his troubles.
Connecticut Postings reports that Joseph Izzo is serving a 30 year sentence for burglary, conspiracy and possession of a firearm.
“This case was about principle,” said his lawyer, Antonio Ponvert III. “This verdict is even more important than if a jury awarded a large sum of money because now it stands as a case of pure principle and that is all my client cared about.”
Izzo states in his suit that on Oct. 3, 2009, Officer james Papciak assaulted him at the MacDougall Walker Center without reason or justification.
Izzo has since been moved to the Cheshire Correctional Facility.
“There has been no disciplinary action against Officer Papciak,” Ponvert said. “Apparently the state Department of Corrections found his actions proper. The jury clearly did not.”
