OPELOUSAS, La. — A fund has been created to help an Opelousas Police Officer who lost everything in a house fire during the recent cold snap.

According to OPD Public Information Officer Jody White, OPD Corrections Officer Mary Fontenot lost her home and all her belongs in the fire Saturday.

He said she was at work when news of the disaster reached her. She arrived home to find the house totally engulfed in flames. Fortunately, nobody was at home at the time.

The house burned completely to the ground. Nothing could be saved.

“Officer Fontenot and her husband lost everything to the fire that is believed to have started due to faulty wiring in the home,” White said.

“The Fontenot family, including officer Fontenot, her husband and their two children, a girl, age 4, and a boy, age 2, welcome any type of donation such as clothing or monetary funds as they attempt to cope with the sudden loss,” White said.
