PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — For the first time, we’re hearing the call for help made from inside Charlotte Correctional Institution on the night a prisoner was found dead.
Over the past two weeks, former guards, prison inspectors and union agents claimed the prison isn’t safe.
Now, it’s the 911 call from that night, made just before 1 a.m. on April 11, could make all the difference in a statewide investigation:
Dispatcher: “911 where’s your emergency?”
Caller: “Yes, hi, this is Charlotte Correctional Institution… we have an emergency here.”
Dispatcher: “What’s going on?”
Caller: “There was an assault on… on staff.”
The call paints a clear picture that a physical struggle between more than just two people occurred inside CCI.
