ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — A rash of gang-related violence and crime at the Lanesboro Correctional Institution prompted officials to initiate a “security procedure.”

WSOC TV reports that FBI and SBI agents questioned prison staff for hours about a flow of contraband into the facility, focusing primarily on cellphones.

Police say that they’ve received numerous reports of staff members or their families receiving threats from inmates.

“An officer was chased by a vehicle that he said he knew was a gang member of an inmate who was inside the prison,” said an official.

The investigation was put into high gear in November 2013 when a sergeant known for her tough attitude on contraband was stabbed in the throat and nearly died.

Some of the gang activity is tied to Urban Blood Nation, the same gang authorities say organized the kidnapping of Frank Janssen, the father of a district attorney who was prosecuting gang members.
