AMHERST, NY — The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association presented a $60,000 check to the Make-A-Wish Foundation Wednesday, the single largest donation ever made by the union.
The Daily News Online reports that the union annually gives between $500,000 and $700,000 to local charities, but has never given a single donation of this size, union president Mike Powers said.
The money was raised by selling raffle tickets on a motorcycle that was designed specifically for correctional officers by Orange County Choppers.
Volunteer recruiter and wish granter Corey Fiorello accepted the check on behalf of the foundation, saying the amount was “amazing” and “would go a long way in granting wishes.”
The winner of the raffle was Aili Matuch, whose father is a correctional officer; Matuch is a kidney cancer survivor and Make-A-Wish recipient.
The winner of the motorcycle was Brian Sullivan from the Fishkill Correctional Facility.
