DANE COUNTY, Wis. — Officers with the Dane County Jail are being credit with preventing an inmate’s suicide.

The Journal Sentinel reports that an inmate, incarcerated for burglary since Sept. 9, had tied a bed sheet to the bars of his cell door and around his neck just after a security check. Inmates in cells surrounding the inmate attempting suicide notified officers.

Officers cut the ligature, lowered the man safely to the floor and untied the linen. The inmate received immediate care at the scene and was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

He has since been returned to the jail, placed on suicide watch and moved to a segregated cell.
