FARMINGTON — Two new full-time corrections officers were hired Tuesday to work at the Franklin County jail.

Commissioners voted to approve jail manager Major Doug Blauvelt’s recommendation to hire Jhustin Welch of Rumford and Scott Nichols Jr. of Wilton. Nichols is the son of Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr.

Both are certified corrections officers and both have experience, county Clerk Julie Magoon said.

Welch has worked at Twin Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset and Scott Nichols Jr. has worked at Somerset County Jail in Madison.

There were numerous applicants, Magoon said.

Commissioner Gary McGrane of Jay asked if there would be any nepotism.

Magoon said no.

Nichols Jr. would report to his supervisor at the jail and Blauvelt. The next administrative supervisor in line is Franklin County Chief Deputy Steven Lowell.

The positions were advertised in several places, she said.

The men will fill the two positions that were left open when corrections officer Jane Proctor became a jail transport officer, and the other when an officer was terminated.

“We are not creating any new positions,” Magoon said.
