EPHRATA, Wash. — A Grant County Jail inmate is facing another year in jail after he struck a corrections officer.

iFiberOne News reports that Marcos Avalos-Barrera was convicted of custodial assault in the fourth degree after 40 minutes of deliberation.

He has prior convictions for malicious mischief and harassment in 2010. When combined with his previous convictions, Avalos-Barrera faces between nine months and a year in jail according to state sentencing laws.

On May 7, two officers were escorting another inmate to the visitor’s area when Avalos-Barrera ran at the inmate once they had reached the bottom of a staircase.

One officer tried to stop Avalos-Barrera by putting himself between the two inmates. Avalos-Barrera hit both the other inmate and the officer during the struggle.

He also forced the officer against the wall.

Avalos-Barrera is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 7.
