Corrections Chief Wendy Jones says inmates who have not been flagged as mentally unstable are given Bic safety razors

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Investigators in Bellingham say a Whatcom County Jail inmate has killed himself with a shaving razor.

The Bellingham Herald reports that 50-year-old Timothy Blair Drafs of Bellingham was being held in a single cell.

Corrections Chief Wendy Jones says inmates who have not been flagged as mentally unstable are given Bic safety razors late each Wednesday, so they can shave before going before a judge on Thursday mornings.

Early Thursday, corrections officers found Drafs in his cell with a serious neck wound. He died despite medical aid.

An autopsy found Drafs cut himself with the razor and county Medical Examiner Gary Goldfogel ruled the death a suicide.

Drafs had been awaiting trial on charges of felony harassment and fourth-degree assault in an alleged attack on his girlfriend.

The death is under investigation.
