YAKIMA, Wash. — A technology upgrade is bringing the Yakima County Jail into the current century.
Constructed in 1984, the security upgrades for the jail includes 200 security cameras, a new electronic system with touch screens and protective bars around the main control room, KIMA TV reports. Security Operations Chief Scott Hines said the upgrades will allow prison officers to monitor inmates better.
The jail boasts more bunks in the cell and cuff ports, and new riot doors have been added to allow officers to control what areas of the facility inmates have access to in the event of an emergency.
Another upgrade includes a new timekeeping system for officers, which allows them to electronically enter their walkthroughs and movements throughout the jail.
The upgrades were funded through a $6 million bond that will be paid back by the Department of Corrections. Everything is expected to be completed within the next few weeks.
