10 Ind. jail employees disciplined after inmate’s escape

Sheriff: Staff made ‘critical errors’

INDIANAPOLIS — Ten employees in the Marion County Sheriff’s Office were disciplined after an investigation into how an inmate escaped from the jail in July.

Sheriff John Layton said “critical errors” by jail staff gave Brandy Majors the opportunity to slip away on July 12. Majors was gone for 29 hours before anyone at the jail even realized she was missing, officials said.

Officials said Majors was mistakenly in an area of the jail with other women who were set to be released due to a “handling error.” Surveillance video shows Majors did not go through the release process, but just slipped into line with the women who were being released.
