CARSON CITY, Mich. — Five inmates out on a work detail from Michigan’s Carson City Correction facility attacked an unarmed corrections officer with a pitchfork on Tuesday afternoon. They then stole a prison van and escaped.
The injured officer, 55-year-old Sam Olivo, was able to muster enough strength to walk 100 yards to a nearby house where a woman called 911.
The inmates took off headed south in a high speed pursuit with police.
After turning down a dead end street, 4 of the 5 inmates were recaptured. The fifth took off on foot, but it wasn’t long before the dogs caught up with him.
Olivo was hospitalized with serious injuries, says State prisons spokesman Russ Marlan.
Today he is still in critical condition, but he woke up this morning, opened his eyes and gave everyone in the room a thumbs-up.
“That’s a very good sign,” Marlan says.
