SACRAMENTO — Under a new law that took effect Monday, thousands of inmates in California are now being released. None of them are being placed on parole.
The early release is part of a state program to ease prison overcrowding, reports KMFB Radio.
Under the conditions of the law, the sentences of those serving six months or more in jail or prison will be cut in half. This includes approximately 6,500 prisoners statewide over the next year.
The Department of Corrections said the program is only for low-risk offenders.
Many people, however, remain concerned.
