LANSING, Mich. — The state doesn’t know yet if the federal government will move detainees from Guantanamo Bay to Michigan, but it’s starting plans to close the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility where the prisoners would have been held.

The Standish prison will close by Oct. 31, said Corrections Department spokesman Russ Marlan, along with Camp Lehman in Grayling. They were two of eight prisons that the state slated for closure in June. Five of those eight have already closed - four in the Upper Peninsula, as well as camps in White Lake Township.

The final prison, Muskegon Correctional Facility, doesn’t have a date for closure yet.
The Oct. 31 closure of Standish and Camp Lehman will translate into the loss of more than 100 jobs.
