NEW LONDON, Conn. — An inmate at Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Montville has been arrested for allegedly trying to set up a murder-for-hire scheme to kill four people, officials say.

In a release on Wednesday, Connecticut State Police said Joshua Peikert, 31, was conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit risk of injury to a child. He was held on $500,000 bond and was arraigned in state Superior Court in New London on Monday.

According to his arrest warrant, Peikert tried to facilitate the killings of two adults and two children, through his cellmate at Corrigan.

That cellmate later notified one of the potential victims via letter, the warrant said, who contacted police. That cellmate told police about the plan, the warrant said, adding he never intended to find a hitman for the job.

According to the warrant, Peikert used his brother, U.S. Army Sgt. Jeremiah Peikert, to facilitate payments to the cellmate as a finders fee. The brother has also been arrested and will be extradited from Texas, where he was stationed and where police have him in custody, to face the same charges.
