UNION SPRINGS, Ala. — An inmate has died after authorities say two other inmates stabbed him at an Alabama prison.

The Alabama Department of Corrections says in a news release that 41-year-old James Edwards Rodgers was attacked by two inmates with makeshift knives Tuesday afternoon at the Bullock Correctional Facility. He died in the infirmary soon after the attack.

Authorities say 19-year-old Paul Johnson and 35-year-old Christopher Hand will be charged with murder.

Rodgers was sentenced in 1998 for first-degree robbery and was scheduled to be released in December 2018.

A motive for the stabbing is unknown. Johnson is serving a three-year sentence for a 2015 first-degree robbery conviction. Hand was sentenced to 25 years in 2008 for distribution of a controlled substance and methamphetamine trafficking.
