EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — A fight over a TV channel at the Madison County Jail led to four men being charged and one briefly hospitalized. The fight happened about 4 p.m. Monday in a cellblock.

According to the investigation, a prisoner changed the TV channel that other prisoners were watching, which led to an argument and a fight broke out, with four men beating up a fifth.

Capt. Mike Dixon said they were not sure if the man they were attacking was the man who changed the channel, or was simply associated with him. The victim was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated for a severe laceration to his face and returned to the jail.

Dixon said with inmates held in such close quarters and only one television per cellblock, the TV channel is frequently a source of contention. However, usually the inmates are able to sort it out themselves without resorting to violence, he said. It was not known what program caused the dispute, he said.
