NEW ORLEANS — The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office continued on Saturday to investigate an incident where 12 inmates barricaded themselves in a housing unit of the Orleans Justice Center on Friday night.
“Depending on the results of that investigation, additional charges will be filed,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The inmates were serving sentences for “previous misconduct charges,” the Sheriff’s Office said. Most were classified as maximum-security inmates.
The incident is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office Investigative Services Bureau.
Original story
A dozen inmates “temporarily barricaded themselves in a housing unit” at Orleans Parish Prison on Friday night in a situation that ended with five inmates injured, according to a prison spokesperson.
The incident happened around 8 p.m, according to a news release, while a deputy on duty was temporarily out the housing units.
By 9 p.m., deputies wearing protective gear entered the pod through a fire exit and directed the inmates back into their cells.
While entering the pod, a food cart fell over and hit an inmate in the head. That inmate, along with four others, were taken to the prison’s medical clinic.
No other details were provided.
