MADISON, Wis. — The two Democrats on the state Senate’s judiciary committee are calling for a hearing on inmate abuse at Wisconsin’s youth prison.

Sens. Lena Taylor of Milwaukee and Fred Risser of Madison sent a letter Wednesday to Sen. Van Wanggaard, the Racine Republican who serves as the committee’s chairman, requesting a hearing on allegations of abuse at the Copper Lake/Lincoln Hills School in Irma.

Word broke last week that the state Department of Justice has been investigating a range of alleged crimes at the facility, including sexual assault and physical abuse of youth and evidence tampering, since January. The FBI has joined the probe as well.

Wanggaard aide Scott Kelly had no immediate comment on the request.
