WARE COUNTY, Ga. — A show of solidarity among correctional agencies followed a tragic crash that claimed the life of a Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) K-9 and left her handler seriously injured.

GDC Special Agent Brandon Jewell and his K-9 partner, Sissy, were involved in a two-vehicle crash on Georgia Highway 122 and Windmill Road in Ware County on Sept. 29, WSB reports. According to the Georgia State Patrol, a Ford F-250 failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the rear side of the GDC vehicle, causing it to flip several times.

K-9 Sissy died at the scene. Jewell was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, officials said.

Following the crash, the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) extended its support by donating an eight-week-old hound to the GDC K-9 Unit. The new pup — whose name will be chosen by SA Jewell — will be trained in tracking operations and join the unit in assisting correctional facilities and community partners.

In a statement, GDC expressed gratitude to FDC for the donation, calling it a reminder of “the compassion and solidarity among law enforcement colleagues as we work together to uphold our commitment to public safety.”
