RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. — Riverside County supervisors agreed at Supervisor Jeff Stone’s request Tuesday to look into writing a measure that would bill some inmates for the cost of housing, feeding and administering medical care to them in the five-jail county correctional system.

The Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 to direct County Counsel Pamela Walls to study the idea and return with a proposed ordinance.

Walls asked for four months, in order to research the legality of the various fees Stone proposed. In a telephone interview with The Californian on Monday, a law professor in San Diego questioned whether the measure would be constitutional.
