LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — An off-duty corrections officer was seriously hurt in a hit-and-run crash Sunday night.

ABC7NY.com reported that Suffolk County CO Gary Harnig, 48, was standing in a pub’s parking lot at 10 p.m. when he was struck. A witness said he heard screeching and saw the car run over Harnig.

“And then the car hit the engine down and ran over the guy a second time,” witness Damon Mulazzi said.

When the driver sped off, Mulazzi pulled his car in front of Harnig’s, put his hazards on and called 911. According to Mulazzi, nurses at the pub ran out and performed CPR on Harnig.

“I got out, tried to talk to his friend, but his friend was so distraught,” Mulazzi recalled.

Police are investigating the possibility that Harnig, who was awake and conscious at the hospital Monday afternoon, may have been run over intentionally.
