AGASSIZ — The inmate responsible for cutting a 7 inch long scar into a female correction officer’s face with a homemade knife will address a bail hearing via a video link from his holding cell.

Kevin Ver Beaulieu has been charged with assault with a weapon and aggravated assault on a corrections officer, according to The Province. The officer, who has not been named, continues to receive medical treatment and has yet to return to work after the June 23 attack.

Beaulieu was in prison on robbery and breaking-and-enter offences and has an entry in the justice ministry database for assaulting a peace officer and another knife-slashing offence in Victoria.

A warning issued June 6 from Kent staff claimed Beaulieu was a potentially high-risk prisoner.

“Inmate continues to state he will stab me or another guard when he gets out of segregation,” warned the internal memo from a corrections officer.

“… He will, and is going to kill a staff member today, tomorrow or in 30 days from now,” the memo cautioned.

The Union of Canadian Correctional Officers and the injured officer who was slashed, accord to regional president Gord Robertson, hope for attempted murder charges.
