SALT LAKE CITY -- The area where a Utah State Prison inmate was stabbed multiple times over the weekend remained in lockdown Monday.

About 6:30 p.m. Sunday, a 29-year-old man was stabbed two to three times in the torso with an unknown weapon in a commons area of the prison, said Department of Corrections spokesman Steve Gehrke.

The man was initially treated at the prison and later taken to a local hospital where he remained in stable condition Monday. Because the stabbing occurred in an area of the prison where gang members are typically housed, Gehrke said there were strong indications it was a gang-related incident.

The 23-year-old man accused of committing the stabbing was moved out of the unit into the maximum security section of the prison, he said. A motive for the attack was still being investigated Monday as was a search for the weapon.

The man accused of committing the stabbing was originally sentenced to prison for a attempted robbery. The stabbing victim was in prison for aggravated robbery, forcible sodomy and drug possession.
