GROESBECK, Texas — A prison bus carrying 26 inmates to a prison unit in Palestine crashed Wednesday morning outside Groesbeck, state officials said.
The bus ran into a guardrail and overturned around 9:30 a.m., Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Ryan Howard said by email.
“A Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) bus was involved in a single-vehicle accident between Donie and Groesbeck on Highway 164, just east of Highway 139,” according to an email from agency spokesperson Amanda Hernandez.
At the time of the crash, the bus held 26 inmates and three staff members, Hernandez said, and all inmates were accounted for.
Seven inmates and one staff member were transported to local hospitals. None of injuries appeared to be life threatening, Hernandez said.
“The bus was transporting 26 inmates from local county jails to the Gurney Unit in Palestine, Texas for intake,” she said.
Howard said that an investigation into the crash is “active and ongoing.”
